Preamble
We, the undersigned, representatives of nations, indigenous communities, sporting organizations, and individuals, recognizing the significance of traditional sports and games (ethnosports) as vital components of our shared cultural heritage, unite under the Global Covenant of Etnosports to commit ourselves to the preservation, promotion, and sustainable development of these invaluable traditions.
Article I: Commitment to Ethnosports
Recognition: We acknowledge the cultural and historical importance of ethnosports in fostering intercultural understanding, social cohesion, and physical well-being among our communities.
Preservation: We pledge to safeguard and protect the diversity of traditional sports and games, ensuring that they are passed on to future generations in their authentic forms.
Promotion: We commit to promoting the practice and recognition of ethnosports on national and international platforms, emphasizing their cultural, social, and health benefits.
Article II: Sustainability
Environmental Responsibility: We acknowledge the need to ensure the sustainable use of natural resources in the organization and practice of etnosports, minimizing their environmental impact.
Community Engagement: We encourage active community involvement in the organization and development of etnosports, promoting inclusivity and diversity.
Article III: Knowledge Sharing and Cooperation
Information Exchange: We commit to sharing knowledge, experiences, and best practices related to the preservation and promotion of etnosports.
International Collaboration: We recognize the global nature of etnosports and pledge to collaborate across borders to facilitate cultural exchange, research, and cooperation in support of our shared goals.
Article IV: Reporting and Accountability
Transparency: We commit to transparent reporting of our efforts in preserving and promoting etnosports, including the monitoring of progress and outcomes.
Accountability: We recognize our collective responsibility in upholding the principles of this covenant and will work to hold ourselves and others accountable for the commitments made herein.
Article V: Implementation and Review
Implementation: We will take concrete actions and allocate resources to fulfill the objectives outlined in this covenant.
Periodic Review: We will periodically assess our progress and, if necessary, adapt our strategies to address emerging challenges and opportunities.
Article VI: Accession
Accession: This Global Covenant of Ethnosports is open for accession by all nations, communities, and organizations that share our commitment to preserving and promoting traditional sports and games.
In witness whereof, we, the undersigned, representatives of our respective nations, communities, and organizations, hereby establish this Global Covenant of Ethnosports on this 17.02.2024, in the spirit of unity, cultural preservation, and sustainable development.
The World Ethnosport Confederation (WEC) is an international institution engaged in activities that aim at increasing and spreading awareness of traditional sports and games. The headquarters of the Confederation, which was established in 2015, is in Istanbul. By supporting traditional games and sports that are passed down from generation to generation for preserving, performing, and maintaining these activities, the institution aims to bring these activities to a more permanent and systematic state by means of an umbrella organization.
